LED Screen: How Much Does It Costs?

March 12th, 2009

Asking how much a LED screen cost, is like asking how much a car cost. Such kind of questions can only have one answer. It depends. On all the following 5 variables:

1- Size: do you need a Smart car or a BMW X5 (i.e. what are the dimensions of the LED screen you want to install?)

2- Power: do you want to drive it at race circuits or you need it just to do the grocery? (i.e. what’s the resolution of the LED screen?). Note for beginners: resolution = distance between the pixels: the closer they are, the better is the image at shorter viewing distances.

3- Reliability: premium car brands use premium materials and are therefore able to provide longer warranties (i.e. so do LED screens’ manufactures)

4- Credentials: how much do you value the world-class service provided by Toyota? (i.e. beware of newly established Asian companies without a proven technology and history)

5- Training: BMW gives a 2 days safe-drive course to any Customer that purchases the new sport series. (i.e. beware of LED screen manufactures that offer no or minimum training on how to use the display effectively)

Before purchasing a LED screen you should ask yourself these questions and rank them depending of the importance that each point has for you. In this simple way you can define the specifications and profile of the ideal screen and manufacturer you are looking for.

Now, if you need to have exact numbers, here there are some real figures:

1- Size: the smallest led screen size I recommend is 2 x 1.5 meters: of course it depends on the pixel pitch, but in general that’s the smallest size I recommend.

2- Power: the best price/performance ratio resolution I recommend is 10mm: again, the resolution depends on the average viewing distance of your audience, but in general 10mm is a safe bet.

3- Reliability: the warranty should be ideally 2 years or more. some entry-level products might have a 1 year warranty. If this is the products you are looking for, make sure that maintenance contracts are available. And if they are, beware of companies asking 25% of the value of the screen starting from the second year for maintenance it might mean that they consider their product at risk.

4- Credentials: for the credentials of the company I recommend you don’t only check the website because anyone could insert a nice picture on his website (e.g. there are a few pictures of an Italian manufacturer screens published on other websites). What I would recommend you to do is to get the name of at least 2/3 Customers that are already using the screen and then talk to them. Or ask for video-testimonial (indicating the details of the person speaking).

5- Training: concerning the training, make sure that your supplier can provide you at least a basic training on how to use the screen. I’m not talking about a technical training (that’s should be obvious) but I’m talking about a training that shows you the best techniques (and the worst mistakes) to create ads, market your screen, find and win advertisers etc.

A final note concerning the price: if you are approaching the LED screen industry for the first time, I think you should consider a minimum investment of about 20/30.000 Euro to purchase a display similar to the one I described above. If you get an offer for a lower price, go through the 5-points-checklist and make sure you are aware of what kind of LED screen you are getting.

LED Lighting

March 4th, 2009

LED lighting is fast becoming standard in homes and business everywhere. LED lighting and light emitting diodes, are a smarter, more efficient way to light a room. Rather than using fragile filament power that burns out easily, LED lighting utilizes the movement of electrons for power and light. Built so that a great number of photons are released outward, the light from a diode is focused through the end of a plastic bulb which produces a bright light.Because the power source or diodes are housed in plastic bulbs, LED lighting tends to be more easily protected than the older standard of fragile bulbs. LED lighting uses only about a third of the electricity needed to supply energy to traditional bulbs giving it longer life and providing almost 60,000 hours of light. Compared with only about 1,000 hours of light in incandescent lighting, this makes for a huge advantage.LED lighting tends to mimic natural, outdoor light. This proves invaluable for the consumer and in case studies has been related to more alertness. LED lighting is also a mainstay for those suffering from SAD, a depression caused by lack of natural light in the winter months. The greener way to go, LED lighting is not only cost effective, it uses less energy. LED bulbs stay relatively cool since they only utilize the diodes for light rather than relying on electricity that heats incandescent bulbs, as the filament must be warmed to produce light. Because the electricity used in LED lighting is being directly used for light this cuts down on energy demands considerably.

LED Light Bulb

A clustered LED light bulb like the CC VIVID Plus LED is an energy efficient, long lasting multi-directional light bulb that actually costs less than CFLs in the long run, while providing healthier lighting right now.

The CC VIVID Plus LED light bulb has a standard cork screw socket, but with a ten year lifespan and like most clustered LED light bulbs of its category, is quickly becoming the trend in sustainable solutions to indoor/outdoor artificial lighting.

The LED is a directional light, that will last for a long time and works well with dimming mechanisms, but when clustered (such as this one with 36 LEDs), that directional lighting quantifies immensely.

available in AC or DC, 120V AC (1.84 Watts) and 12V DC (2.5 Watts), 60 lumens, 36 LEDs, dispersed output, average bulb life of 60,000 hours (ten years), safe for outdoor/indoor/small space use, with a two year warranty, measures 3.25 x 2.25 and ships at one pound.

Energy efficient, dispersed higher light output, perfect for accent lighting, reading, porches, smaller rooms, hallways, cubbyholes, or wherever needed most around the home; clustered LED light bulbs such as the CC VIVID Plus LED bulb are a great way to improve the environmental friendliness of your home for a more self-reliant way of life that starts with your pocket book.

LED Lighting

December 10th, 2008

LED Lighting

A Light Emitting Diode (LED) is a semiconductor device which converts electricity into light. LED lighting has been around since the 1960s, but is just now beginning to appear in the residential market for space lighting. At first white LEDs were only possible by "rainbow" groups of three LEDs — red, green, and blue — by controlling the current to each to yield an overall white light. This changed in 1993 when Nichia created a blue indium gallium chip with a phosphor coating that is used to create the wave shift necessary to emit white light from a single diode. This process is much less expensive for the amount of light generated.

Each diode is about 1/4 inch in diameter and uses about ten milliamps to operate at about a tenth of a watt. LEDs are small in size, but can be grouped together for higher intensity applications. LED fixtures require a driver which is analogous to the ballast in fluorescent fixtures. The drivers are typically built into the fixture (like fluorescent ballasts) or they are a plug transformer for portable (plug-in) fixtures. The plug-in transformers allow the fixture to run on standard 120 volt alternating current (AC), with a modest (about 15 to 20 percent) power loss.

The efficacy of a typical residential application LED is approximately 20 lumens per watt (LPW), though efficacies of up to 100 LPW have been created in laboratory settings. Incandescent bulbs have an efficacy of about 15 LPW and ENERGY STAR® qualified compact fluorescents are about 60 LPW, depending on the wattage and lamp type. Some manufacturers claim efficacies much higher than 20 LPW; make sure to examine system efficacy, which accounts for the power use of all components. In December 2006, the U.S. Department of Energy studied the efficacy of four luminaries. All four fell short of the manufacturers’ claims; the study implies that manufacturers are relying on measurements of how much light an isolated LED produces, rather than how much light an LED luminaire actually delivers.

LEDs are better at placing light in a single direction than incandescent or fluorescent bulbs. Because of their directional output, they have unique design features that can be exploited by clever designs. LED strip lights can be installed under counters, in hallways, and in staircases; concentrated arrays can be used for room lighting. Waterproof, outdoor fixtures are also available. Some manufacturers consider applications such as gardens, walkways, and decorative fixtures outside garage doors to be the most cost-efficient.

China’s LED light industry promising

December 8th, 2008

China is the biggest producer of light sources and products in the world, with sales of the light industry amounting to RMB160 billion in 2006. But China-made lighting products are largely of low and middle grade and account for only 18 percent of the world total. China is thus big, but not strong in lighting products. China is now making progress in technical innovation, application and development capacity in light emitting diode (LED) as well as in device reliability research, and formulating testing rules and standards, indicating its entry into a new development stage in LED production.

Through more than 30 years of development, China has formed an overall production chain of LED products involving production of epitaxy, manufacturing and assembly of chip, and application of LED products. China’s LED display market scale reached RMB7.2 billion in 2007, rising 44 percent over the RMB5 billion in the previous year. The output value of LED chip was RMB1.5 billion in 2007, an increase of 43 percent over RMB1.05 billion in 2006; and output value of LED assembly was RMB16.8 billion in 2007, up 15 percent over the RMB14.8 billion in the previous year. Output of LED increased 24 percent from 66 billion pieces in 2006 to 82 billion pieces, of which output value of high-brightness LED lights reached RMB12 billion, accounting for 71 percent of the total sales of LED. Output value of applied products exceeded RMB30 billion in 2007. China is now the biggest producer and exporter of LED applied products such as LED color display and solar-energy LED landscape light, while also shaping up in production of semiconductor lights.

Semiconductor light has been used in functional illustrating, extending from display to illustrating, and from special-purpose illustrating to general use. With rise of illustrating effect and dropping of prices, LED light is expected to be widely used in outdoor lighting such as road and tunnel lighting, while development and application in new areas such as agriculture, military and aviation will make new progress. With the mounting pressure from energy shortage, LED will be increasingly important, and has a good market potential.

According to statistics on road lights, China had 15 million road lamps in 2006, which has maintained more than 20 percent growth in recent years. China’s market scale of road lamp is estimated at not less than 5 billion each year. If all road lamps become LED, they can help the country save more than 2 billion kWh of electricity. A survey indicates that China’s electricity consumption by lighting stands at more than 300 billion kWh each year. If the road lamps are replaced by LED, it can save a third of the electricity used for lighting, which is equivalent to the total electric power generating capacity of the Three Gorges hydropower station built at a cost of more than RMB200 billion.

China’s LED industry needs to catch up with the advanced world level both in technology and production capacity. China must develop high-brightness LED and seek cooperation for the same, in keeping with the global trend of mergers and acquisitions and partnerships in the LED industry.

Chinese enterprises have introduced advanced technology from other countries by ways of standardizing equity structure, speeding up research and development, mergers and acquisitions, and cooperation. Development of the LED industry will open up broad market prospects and new opportunities of development for green lighting production.
